This is following discussions and inputs in another thread "Usefu Resources for SMES" - http://nasscom-emerge.groupsite.com/discussion/topic/show/107468.
Jyoti Rani Sharma and Srivatsan Chandramouli suggest forming sub-groups within the NASSCOM Emerge groups for different specializations.
I would like to propose assessing the feasibility and support for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) for different specializations among SMEs. NASSCOM Emerge seems to have hit the 1000 member mark and there might be enough support to support these kinds of subgroups. However, without individuals taking the initiative to organize, and actively participate in these SIGs, they would be worthless. The question is whether there is enough momentum for that? Are there people interested in leading these kinds of efforts. Personally, I would be very interested and actively organize and particiapate in the Software Product SIG!
As I see, based on my limited knowledge of the complete variety of SMEs in the Emerge community, I would like to suggest the following SIGs as a start:
a. IT Services SIG
b. BPO/KPO/ITES Sig
c. Software Products SIG - Companies developing software products on contract or on their own
d. Managed Services/Infrastructure Management SIG - This is one of the faster growing segment of ITES services!
e. Quality Assurance SIG
f. Web-Based Startups and Web 2.0 SIG
g. Mobile Startups SIG
This may just be the beginning. TiE Silicon Valley has very successful SIGs along these lines with additional ones for Semi-conductors and Hardware Design SIGs thrown in.
Avinash - You may have gauged and assessed doing something like this. You can share your experiences and wisdom in this regard!
Also curious as to what others think of this? Does it make sense? Most importantly is there enough momentum to get something like this going?
